2 years agoAlong Bar Kochba beach in Ashkelon stretches a well-kept and beautiful promenade, along which are trees and lawns. The promenade is located on the edge of the kurkar ridge that borders the sea and allows a walk with a spectacular view of the sea and the edge of Ashkelon. In the northern part of the promenade is the Holiday Inn Hotel, designed by the Israel Prize-winning architect Yaakov Rechter. The hotel is designed differently from most hotels, and is made of a large white dome that can be seen in the distance. The architect seems to have been inspired by a building about 200 meters south of the hotel – an ancient building that according to Muslim belief is the tomb of Sheikh Awad, whose identity is unknown. The structure of the tomb, is made of kurkar stone and dates to the Mamluk period (1260-1516). It seems that the sheikh’s tomb was built in two stages: first, the main room was created, where the tomb was built, as well as a prayer niche (sword) in the southern wall facing Mecca. In the second phase, two spaces were built surrounding the main room, which were used for pilgrims, food and sleep. South of the sheikh’s tomb is a restaurant with paths leading to the beach. Nice park for a day out. Some nice old ruins to see and close to the sea. Small store but bring your own food if you stay for a few hours.
I’m gonna be biased on this one since I went there on a perfect day. Beautiful blue sky, plenty of sun and blooming shores. I loved it.Will come back for more. There is a convenience store inside if you need emergency bbq stuff. There are plenty of bbq areas. Not as many toilets though. Expect crowd on a holiday or weekend. The beach is sandy and clean.
Admission is 28 shekels per adult and 14 shekels for teenagers. It’s very spacious, and people are enjoying picnics everywhere.
We visited here to see historical sites, and we saw the Canaanite City Gate, the walls, etc. The stunning view of the Mediterranean was impressive.
The Ashkelon park, is a beautiful place for all ages it has some very ancient archaeology stuff dating back to 2000bce! Also it’s situated on top of a cliff overlooking the water, which adds a unique touch to the place!! (28₪ per adult and worth every shekel) has a few parking lots too
Really excellent camp site and national park with plenty of room to pitch a tent or have a picnic. We found a spot overlooking the sea which was spectacular (see picture). There are plenty of other things to see around the site. We’ll certainly be returning.
Toilets were clean at all hours of the day. Showers were fine. There are fridges and phone charging facilities available. Mattresses can be rented.
The site is clean and rules are followed so that there are no morons blasting music and it is quiet at night.
Parking is fine and we were able to enter fairly quickly. There are trolleys to ferry stuff around but not many and you have to hunt them down.
